How to Open Your Own Salon or Spa (Part 1)

Here are some tips on how to get started with opening your own salon or spa:
Figure Out Your Finances – Calculate how much money you need for monthly expenses. This should include rent, payroll, products, equipment, licensing, and an emergency fund. Once you your monthly expenses established, you can figure out how much you’ll need to charge for services in order to make a profit. To save yourself time and trouble, seek advice from a reliable accountant who can help you can help you figure out your operating budget and how you’ll pay your taxes.
Choose a Great Location – Choosing a location for your salon or spa is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. You’ll want to choose a location that’s easily accessible by highway, with high traffic, and plenty of parking. Busy streets and shopping plazas are ideal because they can generate a lot of walk-in business.
Take Care of Licensing – You must have certain state licenses to operate a salon or spa. In the state of California, you’ll need to fill out an Establishment Application and pass an inspection by the California Board of Barbering & Cosmetology. You’ll also have to contact your city and county regarding additional permits or licenses. Keep in mind that everyone you hire will also need to have their cosmetology or esthetics license if they’re working with clients.
Focus On the Details – You should make the atmosphere relaxing your salon and spa, so clients are completely at ease while they’re having their services done. Play soft music and use gentle overhead lighting that’s flattering to the complexion and accurately renders color. Make sure your towels, shampoo bowls, and salon stations are all washed and clean. You should also invest in high-quality products and equipment. Your clients deserve and expect it.
