Organic Beauty Products: What you should know

More people than ever are trying to live organic lifestyles. They care about what’s in the food they eat and the products they use because they know some ingredients contain harmful chemicals. This even happens in beauty products! When applied to the hair or the skin, toxins can easily be absorbed into the body.

That’s why the organic trend is sweeping through the beauty industry. According to a report by Transparency Market Research, organic beauty products saw sales of $7.6 billion in 2012 and are expected to reach over $13.2 billion by 2018. The report attributed the spike to people’s growing concerns about the environment and increased awareness about the hazards of synthetic chemicals.

The good news is that there are now tons of fabulous organic products on the market! Manufacturers are changing the way they’re making and marketing their products so they’re safer for you to use and also gentler on the environment. There are more natural beauty products available to buy everywhere you turn.

Up until now, there’s been little regulation on the organic products market. This makes it very tricky to spot the difference between products that are truly organic and those that are just being marketed as “organic” because it’s trendy.

But that’s all quickly changing under a new state law in California! Under the Safe Consumer Product Regulations that took effect in October 2013, manufacturers will be forced to replace existing chemical ingredients with safer alternatives if possible. You can read all about this groundbreaking new law here.

That’s not all that’s being done, either! Members of the newly formed Natural and Organic Cosmetic Alliance are working to educate politicians on new legislation, help consumers understand labeling terms and ingredients, and create new standards for the organic certified market. It seems that manufacturers and beauty industry professionals have quickly adapted to give consumers what they want. It will be interesting to see how this trend continues to develop, as new laws and regulations take effect in an attempt to better regulate organic beauty products.
