How to Open Your Own Salon or Spa (Part 2)
Do you love the thought of being a licensed hair stylist or esthetician, but want to do things your own way? Opening your own salon will give you total independence and the opportunity to make a real mark on the beauty industry! If you’re considering going this route with your beauty career, it’s important that you make informed decisions so you’re running a profitable business.
In the first part of this blog series on How to Open Your Own Salon or Spa, we covered everything you need to know as you prepare to open the doors, such as calculating your monthly expenses and choosing a great location. Now, as you edge closer to opening the front doors, here are some additional tips for running a profitable business and taking your salon or spa to the next level!
Offer a Range of Services – Create a list of all the services you want to offer with prices. If you’re opening a salon, you could focus solely on hair services, or you could choose to expand into skin and nail services. Many of your clients will be happy to get all of their beauty services done in one place. This means the more services you offer, the more you can maximize your profits. However, it’s important to note that offering more services will also mean hiring more licensed employees.
Hire Qualified Employees – The employees you hire will be a reflection on you. Be scrupulous during the interviewing process to make sure you’re hiring people who you want representing your business. Your employee should present themselves professionally and be skilled at cutting, color, styling, and customer service. Don’t just trust your gut; check their licensing credentials and professional references before making a job offer.
Master Customer Service – Providing great customer service is essential for running a successful salon or spa! Great service keeps your clients returning for more services. It also sparks great word-of-mouth marketing for your business. Your happy clients will tell their friends and family members about their experience, which will send more new clients your way. Have your employees trained on customer service, so they’re going above and beyond with their clients every time they step in your establishment. Invest in Continuing Education – Trends are always changing. Your staff needs to know what is trendy and how to recreate these looks, or your clients will go elsewhere. For this to happen, your employees need to receive additional training. Invest in continuing education classes for your team at least once a month.
