Right now, cosmetology students are busy competing in a Spring Updo Photo Contest on the Salon Success Academy Page on Facebook. We’re so excited to see the finished styles these talented students come up with! On June 13th, the photos will be turned over to the school’s Facebook fans to help choose the winners. Fans will be able to vote for their favorite updo up to once a day. We’ll announce the big winners on the Salon Success Academy Page on Facebook on June 28th.
The Top Knot
The top knot has been a big beauty trend all year long. It’s a great updo for the summer because it shows off your neckline and makes room for a stunning headpiece. Volume is key for the top knot style. Start by teasing the hair with lots of hairspray to give your locks more lift and texture. Fasten the hair into a ponytail at the crown of the head. Sweep the hair around the elastic band, secure it with bobby pins, and hairspray in place. If you don’t have enough hair for a full bun, try using a donut to create the illusion of having more hair.
The Side Bun
The side bun is a timeless, romantic updo that’s perfect for prom, weddings, or any other formal event. To style a side bun, simply gather the hair in a ponytail behind one ear. Right now it’s popular for updo styles to be a little messy, so tease the hair in the ponytail to create a more messy look. Twist the hair into a bun, secure with bobbypins, and hairspray in place. Complete the look by curling a few pieces of hair that frame the face.
Retro Waves
Retro waves are a simple way to add some Hollywood glamour to your big day. To style retro waves, first find a deep side part in your hair. Start curling the hair with a 1″ barrel curling iron, wrapping each curl forward toward your face. Curl one piece of hair after the other in the exact same pattern. Once the curls are in place, spray with hairspray. Take the fine side of your comb and start combing through the curls. If you’ve curled all your sections the exact same way, you’ll see a perfect pattern start to form. Pull up one side of the hair behind your ear and spray with hairspray to hold.
