Say Goodbye to Hair Product Buildup
Has your hair lost its healthy shine? Do you sometimes have an itchy scalp? Product buildup may be the reason. Too much product can make your hair appear dull and limp and cause your ends to split and feel brittle. Follow these 4 hair care tips to get rid of that buildup and bring back the shine!
1. Clarify your hair. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup from your hair. Hairspray, mousse, gels and the moisturizers found in some shampoos and conditioners can build up over time. But did you know that even hard water, minerals and chlorine from swimming pools can cause buildup? Use a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup and restore your hair to its natural shine. If you use a lot of hair product, swim frequently in chlorinated water, or have particularly hard water, you might want to use a clarifying shampoo once a week. Otherwise, one a month should do the trick.

2. Use products that are water-soluble. Many products contain non-water soluble waxes and silicones that can lead to waxy buildup on your scalp. Hairsprays, gels, mousses, and detanglers are common culprits that can contain these ingredients. Avoid them and opt for natural products instead. Choose hair care products that contain honey, shea butter, chamomile, and oils like sunflower, avocado, and olive.
3. Modify your routine. Frequent and severe buildup can also be caused by your styling technique. Apply hairspray at least 6 inches from your hair. Work product on your hands first before applying to allow for even application without clumping. Use any hair product sparingly; don’t pile it on. Try starting with no more than a quarter size dollop of shampoo and adjusting the amount based on how much hair you have. And go for the tried and true two-step process of a separate shampoo and conditioner.
4. Consult a cosmetologist to determine the right products for your hair type. Is your hair curly? Is it dry? No matter what hair type you have, a professional hair stylist can determine the best way to treat it –and not over-treat it! Some hair can be low-porous which means product can’t easily penetrate into the hair cuticle. Find the most effective ways to treat your unique hair!
