Is a Barbering Apprenticeship the Right Choice for You?

If you’ve always dreamed of becoming a barber, there is more than one option to achieve that dream. But before you opt into what seems like an inexpensive shortcut as a barbering apprentice, make sure you have all the facts. Accreditation

Apprenticeships are approved by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) and Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (Board).

Salon Success Academy is accredited through the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). Additionally, we are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Length of Program

As an apprentice, you need to complete a 39-hour pre-apprentice training class before beginning your 3200 hours of on-the-job training over a two-year period. While you’re working, the shop is required to pay you minimum wage. You will also need to complete the related supplemental instruction class, at an additional 220 hours.

The Barbering Program at Salon Success Academy can be completed in as little as 10 months, full-time, or 14 months, part-time.

Quality Control

Although apprenticeships must be approved by the DAS and the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, all programs are not created equal. A participating establishment can charge different fees to participate and what those fees cover is up to the individual sponsor. Also, how and what they train you on will vary, depending on the barbers under whom you work. There are no standardized methods of teaching or any direct supervision from an overseeing body. You could work under a great barber with a wealth of knowledge who also knows how to teach. Or he could be none of the above.

Licensure Exam

Once you have completed at least 21 months of your apprenticeship program, in addition to your mandatory coursework hours, you can apply to take your exam.

From Salon Success, you can pre-apply for your exam even before you complete the 1,000 required hours. Once you have completed 1200 hours toward your license, we’ll have you take mock exams to prepare you for the real exam.
