How to Keep Up with the Latest Hair Trends

hair trends

Hair trends come and go so fast, it can be tough to keep up. Every year, new styles, techniques, colors, and cuts are introduced and then replaced by fads that are even more fashionable. If you need to brush up on what’s hot and what’s not, here’s how to keep up with the latest hair trends:

Flip Through Hair Magazines to Find Hairstyles

Did you know that there are magazines that specifically focus on hairstyles? It’s true! Magazines like Hair Now and Hype Hair include photos and articles on the latest haircuts, colors, and styles. You can find these magazines at your local bookstore or sometimes at the checkout counters in grocery stores and pharmacies.

Check Out Beauty Blogs for Hair Trends

Do a simple Google search to find beauty blogs that focus on hair trends. Many of these blogs are written by hairstylists who have years of experience in the industry. As a bonus, you can also find hair style tutorials, hair care tips and how-tos, as well as product reviews on their sites.

Look for Hairstyles in Beauty Videos

As you scroll through the section of trending videos on YouTube, you’ll notice that quite a few of them focus on beauty, and hair in particular. Many of those beauty bloggers also have YouTube channels dedicated to all things hair, so if you read their blogs, subscribe to their video channels as well.

Scout Social Media for New Hair Trends

You can find virtually anyone and anything on social media, so you’re bound to find some hot new hair trends. Look for hairstylists and hair salons and follow their accounts. Since celebrities are often the first to sport new trends, follow them. Search for trends through hashtags like #hairtrends, #hairstyles, or #trendyhair. Instagram is probably your best tool since it’s all about photos and videos, but Twitter and Facebook are good sites to check too.

Chat with a Hairstylist to Learn About Hair Trends

Do you have a go-to person for your haircuts and dye jobs? Is there a family member or friend who works in the industry? If so, ask them about the latest trends. What haircuts are popular right now? Is there a new technique to dye hair or a unique color combo that’s about to take off? What styles do they see both inside and outside of the salon?

Check Out Hairstyles in Old Movies and TV Shows

Wait, don’t I want the latest hair trends, not the oldest? As they say, what’s old becomes new again, and trends are known for coming in and going out—and then coming back in again. Farrah Fawcett’s iconic feathered hair from Charlie’s Angels was all the rage in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and slightly updated versions have come back around in the ‘00s and ‘10s. You never know what (old) new trend you may spot on the celebrities of yesteryear that will become hot today.

Observe Other People and their Hairstyles

You don’t have to be famous to start a trend. When you’re at the mall, the grocery store, or maybe even work, observe the hairstyles of the people around you. You just may find inspiration at the drive-thru or at the deli counter. Just keep your eyes—and mind—open!

If you want to start hair trends rather than just follow them, you may be interested in a career as a cosmetologist. At Salon Success Academy, we offer a Cosmetology program in California that will teach you the latest techniques in hair styling, cutting and coloring.
