Everything You Need to Know About Eyelash Extensions

Long, luscious lashes are always in style! However, there’s a popular new trend sweeping lashes across the country. Eyelash extensions seem to be the new way everyone is lengthening and thickening their lashes these days. During the service, a licensed professional applies synthetic lashes one-by-one for a beautiful, natural look that lasts much longer than mascara or false eyelashes.

Because it’s so popular, many licensed estheticians are becoming certified in eyelash extension application in order to offer this service to their clients. With services running between $100 to $400 and monthly touch-ups required, it can be very profitable for estheticians to add this service to their menu. In 2012, Women’s Wear Daily reported that false eyelashes were leading the sales growth in the beauty industry, as sales increased to $44 million.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash Extensions are synthetic eyelashes that are curved to replicate natural eyelashes. There are three main types silk, mink, and synthetic. They range in size and thickness from 6mm to 17mm and can be applied in clusters or individually. A licensed professional will be able to match the length, curl, and texture of the extension to the natural lash in order to get the best results.

How long does it take to apply eyelash extensions?

Applying a full set of lashes can take between 1 and 2 hours. How long it takes depends upon the number of lashes needed to get the look the client wants. The lashes are applied as the client lies back on an esthetician bed. After cleaning and priming the lashes, a licensed professional applies the extensions one-by-one using a specially formulated, semi-permanent glue.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

Natural eyelashes fall off every 30 to 45 days. Since each lash extension is attached to a single eyelash, the extension will naturally fall out along with the eyelash it’s attached to. It’s recommended that clients come in for a touch-up every three to four weeks. If they wait too long, the eyelash extensions will fall out and they’ll need a full set.

How do I become certified in eyelash extensions application?

Some esthetician schools, like Salon Success Academy, include eyelash application certification as part of the esthetics program. But if you’ve already completed esthetician school, most lash extension companies offer certification courses for their product line. However, you will need a cosmetology or esthetics license in order to enroll in these courses.
