What Are the Best Hairstyles for Different Men’s Face Shapes?

Barbering client getting a new men's hairstyle

Men’s hairstyles are not one-size-fits-all. The right haircut will show off your style and reveal who you are as a person. So before you go to your local barber to get your hair cut, know what style might be the best fit for your face. Here are some tips to figure out the best hairstyle for your face shape:

  1. Measure Your Head

Grab a tape measure and take the measurements of your forehead, cheekbones, jawline, and face length. Once you have your measurements, note which is the largest of the four and compare them to these profiles to see which best describes your shape.

  1. Find Your Shape

Oval: Face length is greater than the width of the cheekbones, and forehead is greater than the jawline. The angle of the jaw is rounded rather than sharp.

Square: All measurements are fairly similar. The angle of the jaw is sharp rather than rounded.

Rectangle: Face length is the greatest measurement. Forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are similar in size.

Round: Cheekbones and face length have a similar measurement. They are larger than forehead and jawline, which also have a similar measurement. The angle of the jaw is soft and much less defined.

Diamond: Face length measures largest. Then, in descending order: cheekbones, forehead, and smallest is jawline. The chin is pointed.

Heart: Forehead measures greater than the cheekbones and jawline. The chin is pointed.

Triangular: Jawline measures greater than cheekbones, which measures larger than forehead.

  1. Find Your Style

Now that you’ve found your face shape, use the information below to figure out what styles would work best for you.

Square: This face shape is considered the masculine ideal. It is characterized by a strong jawline and an overall chiseled appearance. It is a great slate for most styles. However, classic, neat haircuts complement this face shape best. Think about close fades, side partings, and short layers.

Oval: This is a nice canvas to experiment with. As you are symmetrical and well- proportioned, you will be able to rock most any hairstyle you choose. To optimize your style, one tip is to wear your hair off the forehead to create some volume on top. Avoid forward fringe.

Rectangle: This is the longest face shape. As such, it requires some softening to make sure your face doesn’t look even longer than it is. You don’t want to make the sides too short. Secondly, find a style that allows your hair to fall to the sides or across your forehead to add width.

Round: Round faces with no obvious angles benefit from a haircut that adds definition. You can create the illusion of structure with your hair. A style with height on top and tight at the sides works well to add definition.

Diamond: Diamonds are the rarest face shape. Because your chin and brow are narrow and your cheeks wider, it takes some special tricks to make you stand out. Fringes work well to add volume to your forehead, and longer styles that you can tuck behind your ears will help accent your bone structure. Don’t take sides too short, given the width of your cheeks. softer layers also work well for this face shape.

Heart: Your forehead is wider and your face narrows to a pointed chin. This face shape benefits from some illusions to make it appear more proportioned. Avoid cuts that are tight, because they will accent your narrow chin. A mid-length look is your best bet.

Triangle: Think of a triangle as the opposite of a heart. Narrow on top with a wide jawline, it needs a lot of volume to smooth things out. Try a longer haircut with full sides to add depth.
