Beauty Industry Booming With Independent Contractors
Cosmetologists and estheticians working as independent contractors is one of the fastest growing work models in the beauty industry today. The trend is only expected to continue! It is predicted that by 2015, almost half of all U.S. salons will offer some form of booth rental.
It’s easy to see why this option is appealing to so many licensed cosmetologists and estheticians! Working independently gives beauty professionals freedom they can’t find as employees in a salon or spa. Independent contractors get to create their own schedules, set their own prices, and offer the client products and services that they want.

While working independently can be very liberating and rewarding, it also means taking on more responsibility! That flexible schedule means you’ll be the one setting and keeping appointments. All those product and services choices also mean you’ll need to do research about what’s hot and what’s not in the industry. As a professional in the beauty industry, you’ll need to take continuing education classes. When you work for someone else, they often pay those expenses. When you’re on your own, it’s your responsibility to continue—and pay for—your education.
You’ll also be solely responsible for marketing your business to new clients, which can be challenging. To learn some new marketing technique for beauty professionals, read these 4 Ways Stylists Can Market to New Clients.
Some of the options you’ll have if you choose to work as an independent beauty contractor are:
- Work in a full-service salon, where some or all of the stations have independent contractors instead of employees
- Choose a more traditional booth rental, where you rent the booth by the hour, either on your own or sharing with someone else
- Rent a salon suite, which is a huge beauty industry trend in California right now
A salon suite gives you many of the perks of owning your own salon or spa, without the huge overhead. You could get to design the space how you want, with paint colors, furniture, and décor. Many of the salon suites have a reception area, receptionist, and washers and dryers that can be used by all the renters. Some owners have even started offering continuing education classes and networking events to support the businesses of their tenants.
