One of the first hurdles you’ll have to get over to have a successful career in the beauty industry is your salon interview. Here are some tips to help you ace your salon interview:

Come Prepared

Do thorough research beforehand. Browse through the salon’s website and social media pages. Look up directions that’ll get you there about 15 minutes early. Keep in mind the time of day and plan for traffic or other delays. You may also want to give yourself time to freshen up before walking through the front door. Bring a polished portfolio and résumé. Look the Part

Since you’re applying for a job in the beauty industry, you’ll want to look the part. Dress professionally, but find a balance with your own personal style. Make sure your hair, nails, and overall look represent you and your passion for the industry.

Practice

Many salons incorporate a practical portion into the interview, so be prepared to show off what you can do. Ask for help and advice from your instructors beforehand and practice your techniques on family, friends, or classmates. If you’re well prepared, there’s no reason to be nervous. The interviewer will want to hire someone who’s competent and confident.

Be Ready for Questions

Prepare answers to some common interview questions. For example, you might be asked why you want to work at the salon. This is where all that research comes in handy! Be prepared to ask questions of your own that show your genuine interest.
