5 Summer Skin Care Basics

You’re bound to be showing off more skin this summer season! While that can give your skin a bronzed, glowing look, it also means increased exposure to the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays and increased risk for skin cancer, sun spots, and premature aging. It’s vital that you update your daily skin care routine with the seasons and take preventative measures to keep your skin in tip-top shape.

Be Generous With The SPF – Even if you’ll be outside for only a short period of time, you’ll still be exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. Start adding sunscreen to your morning beauty routine to ensure you’re protected no matter what the day throws at you. If you know you’re going to be outside for a longer period of time, you’ll need to be much more generous with the SPF. Stick to SPFs that are 30+, reapply every two hours, and shade your skin with a hat or shirt whenever possible.

Soothe Your Sunburn – If you didn’t listen to our first skin care tip, the damage is already done, but that doesn’t mean you need to suffer! If you happen to get a sunburn this summer, you’ll want to get the sting and inflammation down. Thankfully, there are many soothing botanical and cooling gels available that can do the trick. For severe burns, you can also apply ice in a facecloth to the inflamed skin for 5 to 10 minutes at a time and take aspirin to reduce the swelling.

Stay Hydrated – Higher temperatures can lead to dehydration, which can mean headaches and dizzy spells, not to mention premature aging of your skin! Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water this summer. The recommended daily amount is eight 8-ounce glasses of water, which will maintain the moisture balance in the body and skin. There are also facial mists available, which mist the skin with natural minerals, making it more hydrated and radiant.

Exfoliate Often – You shouldn’t skip on the facial scrubs just because it isn’t winter and your skin isn’t dry and flaky. It’s quite the opposite! Your pores actually look larger in hot, humid weather. Use a gentle exfoliant on your face at least twice a week. This will remove dead and dry skin cells from the outer layer of the skin. After you exfoliate, follow with a hydrating cream to seal in the moisture. There’s another great benefit to this routine- your makeup will last longer on freshly exfoliated skin!

Ditch The Heavy Makeup – Speaking of makeup, you don’t want heavy makeup weighing you down and clogging your pores in the summer. Heavy makeup products are likely to sweat off your skin and run down your face in high humidity. Switch up your foundation with lightweight tinted moisturizer or BB cream. Use a dab of a cream blush on your cheekbones, apply a few layers of mascara, and some lip gloss and you’re good to go! Applying less face makeup will let your skin breathe and make it look naturally flawless.
