A DIY Facial from Your Kitchen: Here’s How to Get Started
Who doesn’t love being pampered? A relaxing day at the spa can recharge your batteries and help you feel ready to face the world again. There are many benefits to those luxuriant facials! But if time, money, or other circumstances don’t allow for a trip to a fancy day spa, you can head straight into your kitchen instead.
It may sound funny, but you probably already have the essential ingredients for a great facial in your very own cupboard. Put on your apron and get started with these DIY facial tips and recipes:
Step 1: Steam Before Your Facial
Steam will open up your pores so they can absorb the nutrients from your DIY facial; it also helps them release toxin buildup. And it makes you feel warm and cozy! Here’s how to do it:
- Bring a pot of water to a boil.
- Take the pot off the stove and add in some helpful herbs or essential oils. Rosemary and lemon oil can soothe your skin while chamomile can help with dryness.
- Bring the pot to a table and lean your face into the steam, from about a foot above the pot to prevent burns.
- Wrap a towel around your neck to trap the steam
- Pat your face dry with a towel when you’re finished.
Step 2: Cleanse Your Face with Honey
Honey has antibacterial properties and is also hydrating and soothing to irritated skin. While your skin is still warm, put a spoonful of honey on a damp cloth and gently rub your face—just like you’d use a cleanser or face wash. Gently rinse off with warm water.
Step 3: Exfoliate Your Skin for the Facial
This will remove dead skin cells and impurities from your skin. It will also leave your skin glowing and healthy after the DIY facial. Here are a couple of recipes to try:
- Coconut oil and sugar—Mix one tablespoon of oil with two tablespoons of sugar. Scrub your face and neck for sixty seconds, then rinse.
- Honey and oats—Combine one-eighth of a cup of honey, one-eighth of a cup of olive oil, and one-fourth of a cup of oats in a bowl. The honey and oil combo are great for dry skin.
Step 4: Apply a Mask to Your Face
Facial masks are nourishing for the skin, and a lot of fun to make and apply. There are dozens and recipes to try, but here are a few simple ones:
- Honey and citrus—Mix three tablespoons of orange juice and a quarter-cup of honey. Spread on your face and let it sit for 20 minutes before washing off. This will leave your skin with a healthy, hydrating glow.
- Avocado and cocoa—This mask not only hydrates; it has antibacterial properties as well. Combine a quarter of a mashed avocado with one tablespoon each of cocoa powder and honey. Keep on your face for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
- Cucumber and oats—Blend half of a cucumber with one tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons each of oats and lemon juice. Leave on for 15 minutes, then wash off with cold water. The cucumber and honey duo is great for oily skin.
Step 5: Complete the Facial with Toner
Toner is also great for oily skin and it can even soothe sensitive skin. It’s relatively easy to make, too. Just mix one cup of green tea with one-fourth cup of apple cider vinegar. If you have a spritz bottle, pour it in for a refreshing mist. If not, apply with a cotton ball.
