Monique: Mastering it All, One Step at a Time

When Monique enrolled at Salon Success Academy, she didn’t just dip her toes in. She dived in fully, soaking up every lesson, experience, and opportunity.

“Everyone here has something to teach you,” says Monique. “I made the most of it and I had a really great experience with the school.”

She was a student ambassador and a campus leader. She participated in just about everything and says that she loved learning.

Never Stop Learning

“You can never stop learning,” says Monique. “There are always new trends and techniques and styles. You need to take in everything anyone is willing to teach you. That’s what I did at Salon Success. That’s what I’m still doing.”

In the Cosmetology Program at Salon Success Academy, Monique acquired important skills in hairstyling, cutting, coloring, and bleaching. She learned the basics of hair anatomy and how to provide services like facials, manicures, pedicures, and hair removal. And the importance of adhering to strict regulations about disinfecting and sanitizing tools and equipment. She also learned a lot about the business side of the beauty industry—which will come in handy if she decides to open her own salon.

“I’m not sure what I’ll do,” says Monique, “maybe open my own place someday, or maybe come back and teach. Right now, I’m still learning.”

In a little more than a year, Monique enrolled in her Cosmetology program, became a student ambassador, became a licensed cosmetologist, and began working behind the chair. Monique is currently the Social Media Coordinator at Salon Success Academy and she is doing a fantastic job in her role.

“This was a good choice for me,” says Monique. “I’m learning so much. To be really good as a stylist you need to cover your bases and then master it all. The people I work with have been doing this for five-plus years and I’m straight out of beauty school so I’m paying attention.”

The Barbering Program

Monique loved her time at Salon Success and says she may be back soon. “Once I’m more established, I would like to go for my barbering license. It’s really something I’m interested in. It’s like a whole other world, but I think it would be good to add to what I know, open even more doors,” says Monique. “Salon Success has a Barbering Program and I can go back there in a year or so.”

MUD Make-up Program

While enrolled, Monique had the opportunity to become the first cosmetology student to participate in the Make-up Designory (MUD) Beauty Essentials course at our Redlands campus. She learned so much about the foundations of Make-up application. “I really liked learning the real way to do makeup. We watch YouTube videos and think we know how to do makeup”, she says. “But actually being able to know the science of makeup and how to formulate foundation and concealer to every skin type was really cool.”

Salon Success Academy makes it easy for licensed cosmetologists to add to their education. If you received your Cosmetology training from Salon Success, you can transfer 1300 of your prior hours to the new program. That means you can become a licensed Barber in a lot less time for a lot less money.
