The Truth about Organic Makeup
More people than ever are trying to live organic lifestyles. They care about what’s in the food they eat and the products they use because they know some ingredients contain harmful chemicals. This even happens in beauty products! When applied to the hair or the skin, toxins can easily be absorbed into the body.
The good news is that there are now tons of fabulous organic products on the market! Manufacturers are changing the way they’re making and marketing their products so they’re safer for you to use and also gentler on the environment. There are more natural beauty products available to buy everywhere you turn.
What Is Organic Makeup?
Organic makeup functions like regular makeup, but it is made entirely from natural ingredients. There are no preservatives, dyes, or fragrances in organic makeup. Rather, it features ingredients like beeswax, almond oil, and safflower oil. These natural ingredients are less irritating, so organic makeup is perfect for those with sensitive skin.
Organic Makeup Is Not the Same as Natural Makeup
Natural doesn’t mean organic. If you think natural and organic are the same, you’re wrong. Organic means that a product’s ingredients don’t contain artificial colors or preservatives, toxic pesticides, or petroleum. The truth is, organic products have very strict requirements.
On the other hand, the word natural is a vague term that manufacturers use. Some natural makeup does not follow any USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) regulations. Be wary of the word natural. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s good for you. For example, tobacco is natural, but it certainly isn’t good for you.
Be Wary of the USDA Organic Seal with Makeup
The USDA Organic Seal has many meanings. If you see the USDA’s Organic Seal on a product, including food and cosmetics, it doesn’t necessarily mean all the ingredients are entirely organic. “100 percent organic” means that the product contains only organically produced ingredients. Simply “organic” means the product contains at least 95 percent of ingredients that are organically produced. Products that are either categorized as 100 percent organic or just organic can display the seal. However, “made with organic ingredients” means that the product contains at least 70% organic ingredients. Products that fall in this category can’t display the seal, but they can identify which ingredients are organic.
Government Doesn’t Regulate Organic Makeup
Unlike food and drugs, makeup doesn’t need FDA or USDA approval to hit the shelves. Your skin is your largest organ, so be sure the products you put on it are something you would want absorbed throughout your entire body. If you want to have control over what you put in your body, then read the ingredients carefully.
