5 Common Hair Myths Busted

There are all sorts of hair myths that are simply not true. Get the facts straight. Here are the 5 most common hair myths busted:

Myth 1: Brush your hair 100 strokes a day.

Brushing your hair 100 strokes each day doesn’t make your hair shinier and could do more harm than good. Too much brushing can cause split-ends, breakage, and damage. A few gentle strokes will do to distribute your natural oils and make your hair shine. Regular brushing also nourishes the hair follicles and keeps your hair healthy.

Myth 2: Wash your hair every day.

Daily shampooing is unnecessary and can actually remove the healthy oils your hair needs. It can leave your hair, skin, and scalp dry and itchy. How often you should shampoo all depends on your hair type. Long, thick hair can go longer between washings because oil doesn’t travel down as quickly as it does on straight, fine hair.

Myth 3: Change your products frequently.

Switching up your shampoo doesn’t make your hair healthier. Dull hair can be the result of product buildup, but you can prevent that with a clarifying shampoo. Use one to remove buildup and restore your hair’s healthy shine. Make sure your regular shampoo is sulfate-free with plenty of cleaning power, but without the unnecessary residue.

Myth 4: Hair grows faster when it’s trimmed often.

Hair grows about 1/2 an inch per month. Trimming the hair doesn’t make it grow faster, but it will keep your hair healthy so it can grow longer. Trimming the ends, especially when they split, is recommended usually every 6 to 8 weeks. This will keep your hair healthy enough to grow long, luscious locks.

Myth 5: Pluck one gray hair and three more will come to its funeral.

Pulling out one gray hair will not cause three more to grow back. While untrue, plucking a gray hair can damage the root and cause an infection or scaring. Although stress is often blamed, your genetics are the main culprit for gray hair. Enlist the help of a professional hair stylist to color and hide gray hairs.
