How to Choose the Right Brush for Your Hair
Whether your hair is straight, curly, or long – there’s a brush that suits every need. This guide will help you choose the right brush for you, your hairstyle and optimum hair care.
Wide Tooth Comb
The wide tooth comb should be the first thing you grab when you step out of the shower. It’s the best tool for detangling hair, especially when wet. When your hair is wet, it’s more susceptible to damage so you need to be extra careful. A regular bristle brush can pull and even break the hair. For stubborn tangles, spray some leave-in conditioner on your comb and work it through your hair. Wide tooth combs are also great for curly hair; they gently comb through your hair without leaving it frizzy.
Rat-Tail Comb
Use a rat-tail comb to make a clean, precise part in your hair. The thin teeth of the comb help smooth strands to prevent flyaways around the crown of your head. Use the tail of the comb to section your hair for styling and more precise drying.
Paddle Brush
Use a paddle brush with ball-tipped, plastic bristles to avoid snags and pulls. A paddle brush will follow the contours of your head and the rubber cushion will decrease friction and prevent static. A flat, wide paddle is perfect for medium to long hair.
Round Brush
A round brush is what you’ll want for all your styling needs. It’s ideal for creating volume, curls, and waves. Get the shape you want by applying a little heat. Choose a thermal barrel to eliminate hot spots that could burn the shaft of your hair. Use a vented base brush so the heat will pass through and dry your hair faster. To minimize heat damage, choose a brush that has a combination of nylon and boar bristles. Boar bristles help minimize the contact the hair has with the barrel. These bristles also give hair a healthy shine without the frizz. Nylon bristles won’t stretch or break the hair strands as they slide along. The size of the barrel is another consideration – the smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl. Use a small barrel, less than 1.5 inches, for shorter hair to create volume and texture for layered styles. Use a large barrel, more than 2 inches, to get fuller body.
