What Will I Really Learn in Esthetician School?
Are you passionate about skin care? Jobs for licensed estheticians are predicted to grow about 17% between 2021 and 2031, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s because of the rising number of men and women who want to reduce the effects that aging has on their skin, plus the huge recent advancements in the skin care field.
Once you finish esthetician school and earn your esthetician license, there are many places you can choose to work. You can work in a:
- Day spa
- Medical spa
- Resort
- Plastic surgeon’s office
- Independent consultant
- And more
So what exactly will you learn in esthetician school? A whole lot! We’re going over all the things you’ll learn!
Skin Analysis – As a licensed esthetician, every skin treatment you perform will likely begin with a consultation. In esthetician school you’ll learn how to perform a skin analysis, determine the client’s skin type, and identify and treat a variety of different skin issues such as:
- Acne & oily skin
- Dry skin
- Sensitive skin
- Sun damage
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Whiteheads and blackheads
You should also be able to tell clients if anything requires a dermatologist’s attention and advise them on an at-home skin care regimen.
Facials – As a licensed esthetician, you need to know how to perform a variety of different facial treatments so you can create a customized experience for your client. You’ll learn how to cleanse and tone the skin, perform different exfoliation treatments, use warm and cool compresses, and perform soothing face massages.
Basics of skin anatomy and physiology – Estheticians need to understand how the body functions as a whole. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to actually understand the skin, its issues, and how to fix it!
Makeup Application – In esthetician school, you’ll receive in-depth instruction on the latest makeup techniques and trends. This includes learning how to match your client’s skin tone, blending foundation, highlighting and contouring, applying false eyelashes, and recreating the trendy smoky eye look. You should also learn special effects makeup skills that can be used for working in theater or TV.
Body Treatments – Estheticians learn to care for faces and the whole body, too. You’ll learn how to perform a variety of treatments, such as body masks, scrubs, and wraps, and aromatherapy treatments.
Hair Removal – You’re taught a variety of methods for removing unwanted hair from clients in esthetician school. You’ll learn the art of waxing, threading, tweezing, and eyebrow shaping.
State Board Prep – Your future career as a license esthetician depends on you being able to pass the State Board exam. That’s why as you near graduation, your esthetician instructors will focus on preparing you for the exam. They’ll give you tips and tricks for passing it, prepare you for questions you’ll see on the exam, and possibly give you a practice exam before the big day.
