Enroll in a California Barber Program

In the state of California, you are required to complete at least 1,000 hours of training. Salon Success Academy requires students to have their high school diploma or GED before they can enroll in our barber program. You also have the option of choosing to complete an approved apprenticeship program if you decide to go that direction instead. 

When choosing your education in California, the Board requires that you barber program includes these classes in its curriculum:

• Hairstyling
• Health and safety considerations
• Laws and regulations
• Disinfection and sanitation
• Shaving
• Hair cutting
• Hair coloring and bleaching
• Preparation and performance
• Chemical straightening and permanent waving
• Anatomy and physiology

Complete California Barber License Application

Once you complete the required amount of hours in California, you can register for the exam. Complete your license application online. It can take about 6-12 weeks to schedule your test date, so be sure to register as soon as you complete your training. You can expect to be notified when you are approved to sit for the barber exam.

Pass Your Barber Exams

You are going to want to prepare for your barber exam and study before the big day! At Salon Success Academy we require our students to take and pass a mock State Board exam during their senior year. This is a great way to prepare our students for the exam and give them a better understanding of what they can expect. 

Maintain Your Barber License 

Stay on top of your barber licensing every two years and pay the renewal fee each time. No need to receive additional education. There are no necessary additional education requirements needed in California and no need to continue your education. If you are looking to further your knowledge and skill set, you can attend workshops and consider other certifications that your school might offer.
